Ok, I keep being told this by various english teachers so I may as well share it -
Don't start sentences all the same way.
I often over use words like 'they' and 'then' at the beginning of sentences.

Me as well.
Don't throw all the information and backstory at once to the audience. A good story has it balanced out that when you have the right combination, they want to keep reading.
Do consider accents.
Don't do any accents if you don't know how to spell, say, or pronouce it yourself.

Yeah, with me though it's I, or He/she
Don't ever start a sentence with and, but, or, or because. Unless you know how to use it really properly!

Do always give your character realistic qualities. For instance, for every good thing, try giving him or her a bad trait.
Don't make your character perfect. Mary-Sues are awfully annoying!

Dad use to tell me this
Do use the verb actions, and descriptives, past future, and present, and progress, and participle, and augsilary correctly
don't use ands too much, and do not have run on sentences.

Don't forget fragments as well! They can be very confusing and should always be made into a full sentence.
